Hi first i wan't to intoduce myself, i m henrik and am from germany. my english isn't good as is should be but i hope everyone can understand me. :)
I'm searching for a Siemens BS-11 GSM1800.
Why? Im the technical operator of the biggest summer-camp in lower saxony / germany of youth-fire-fighters. I know hard to understand. :D
My plan is it, to operate a GSM zell on our camp next year.
some background informations: -2000 youth member at the camp-ground. -up to 200 tecnical supporters. -300 youth supporters.
more informations about the event 2009: http://www.zeltlager-2009.de/
The Mainorganisators of the camp know about this idea, and are willing to get a short-time licence for the event. The first contact to the "Bundesnetzagentur" is already done.
What can i give the openBSC community? A place to test / benchmark OpenBSC. Also i'm a c / php developer and maybe i can help develope some external features for openBSC.
Greetings from cold old Germany
Henrik
Hi Henrik,
first of all, thanks for your introduction and thanks for your interest in OpenBSC.
Let me just raise some general thoughts about operating your own GSM network at such a camp site:
1) whenever those teenagers register to your local network, they will no longer be reachable from the public network, i.e. their parents or other friends cannot call them on their regular phone
2) when you operate that network as an official services for those youth groups, think of liability aspects. As opposed to the HAR 2009 or 26C3, you will not deal with technical people who understand what they're doing, but you're dealing with innocent "normal" people. People who e.g. expect emergency calls to work reliably - something that OpenBSC clearly cannot offer at this time.
3) Also, I am not sure if you are already providing a telecommunication service to the public at that point. There are regulations regarding data safety, privacy but also lawful intercept and data retention that need to be considered. Operating an actual network for people who just want to use it (as opposed to people who want to test and research GSM technology) is really a different case.
So my question would be: What is your reason for wanting to operate a GSM network at that camp?
* Is there no real GSM network coverage on that camp? * Or do you want to provide free calls / sms for your camp attendees? (do you want your youngsters to spend even more time with their phones than usually?) * Or are you simply interested in doing it because it's cool? ;)

I only know of one unit, owned by somebody in Austria, and the last time I knew that unit was even broken. What you can find more often are ip.access nanoBTS for GSM 1800. Those units have 200mW output power, which is the same power level than what we used at HAR2009 - though in a completely different frequency band with different signal propagation erties.
The Mainorganisators of the camp know about this idea, and are willing to get a short-time licence for the event. The first contact to the "Bundesnetzagentur" is already done.
I think the regulatory license is the smallest problem - if at all.
Regards, Harald

I'm aware of this, and i forget to tell that the gsm net will be limited to the organisators and the youth advisor.

The fact of emergency call's are not the problem, on camp site we got the so called TEL and a DRK Station, both are official branches of the emergency control stations. So if someone calls 112 with need for a doctor, he will get one :)

In 2009 we use a huge number of 2m Radio's. These Radio's are normaly used by the German Firefighters. And are Devices taken from fire engines.
- Or do you want to provide free calls / sms for your camp attendees? (do you want your youngsters to spend even more time with their phones than usually?)
The main reason providing a own gsm network, is that in 2009 my mobile phone bill breaks the 200€ milestone. If we talking about the financial site, there are up to 120 people doing organisation stuff the hole day. Those People normaly use on of the radio's to communicate with each other. When the person i wanna talk to isn't reachable trough his radio, i call him. Thats why i think that a own GSM Network is a realy good idea for this event.
- Or are you simply interested in doing it because it's cool? ;)
Jap, this is truely also a reason :)

Thanks for all kind of response. Henrik.
Hi Henrik,
I think what you need is a local radio repeater. Which does allow you to expand your reception area. Depending were the camp will be, a local ham radio (funk amateure) club could be able to help you, at least to finde the right equipment for your event.
That would allow you to use the 2m commercial radios and save money in the same time.
regards miguel
Hi Miguel, maybe my english is too bad to understand :) The problem with the radios is not the usability or the range. The problem is that in germany the 2m Licence is for so called BOS (Police, Firefighters ect.) and that what we do, using the radios for a youthfirefighter event is a grey area in law.
(Was ich meine ist das man die dinger eigentlich nur in einsatzfall oder zu übungszwecken verwenden soll.)
Actual not every youth-advisor got one of these radios.
Happy new year. :)
