Hi Henrik,
I think what you need is a local radio repeater. Which does allow you to expand your reception area. Depending were the camp will be, a local ham radio (funk amateure) club could be able to help you, at least to finde the right equipment for your event.
That would allow you to use the 2m commercial radios and save money in the same time.
