No, I don't really care about genders here.
I was being semi-sarcastic there: I responded to your initial inquiry
in good faith, explaining how I test voice calls in my environment,
which I do all the time - as I explained, doing voice tests is one
of the reasons for setting up my own GSM network in the first place.
But when my response was met with negativity, I had to re-read your
initial inquiry, to see if my response was justified, and I saw the
part asking "I would like to know how do you guys test voice" - that
part was my justification for responding in the first place - and then
I thought "wait a minute, Vadim said _guys_, so strictly speaking I am
_not_ supposed to respond to this one after all". Please be assured
that I know full well that you did not intend any gender discrimination,
I was simply being sarcastic in interpreting the negativity that ensued.
I was not following FreeCalypso mailing lists from the
beginning, but I
don't remember seeing anybody from Osmocom joining there and saying:
"hey, your approach is not as good as mine, look at our alternatives".
If someone did that, I would have engaged them in a debate, starting
with chronology: in every single instance where I have developed an
alternative to some component that was previously implemented somewhere
in Osmocom universe, chronologically the Osmocom version existed first,
and then came my alternative:
Osmocom original Falconian alternative
---------------------------------------------
OsmocomBB FreeCalypso
pysim fc-simtool and related tools
osmo-sip-connector ThemWi system sw
gapk gsm-codec-lib
All items in the left column in the above table existed before I
embarked on developing corresponding items in the right column.
Therefore, if someone came to me to argue that items in the left column
are better than those in the right column, my response would be that
flaws in those left-column items (ethical for the first row, technical
for the other rows) were the very reason why I had to develop right-
column alternatives in the first place.
Of course, valid criticism is always welcome, as well
as patches are.
And I love to see people sharing here what they are working on, but IMO
it should not be that aggressively advertised as you do sometimes.
I can't change the way I am; all I can do is continue working on GSM
(emphasis on _GSM_) to the best of my ability. My loyalty is to GSM,
I seek to build networks that will be no worse than those being
wrongfully shut down by first-world commercial operators, as well as
new GSM MS that bring back the "glory days" of late 1990s and early
2000s - and looking at the state of currently available FOSS and PSS
offerings in this area, I see that Osmocom already provides a very good
starting point, but it is just that, a starting point, and there is a
ton of work remaining. I am actively working to get from "here"
(current state of FOSS and PSS offerings, mostly Osmocom) to "there"
(the world of GSM I dream into being), but I do a lot of things
differently from those of you who have adopted Osmocom as your core
identity, rather than just a tool in service to goals of GSM.
