After changing the appropriate phys_chan_config of timeslot 1 from its default "SDCCH8" to "TCH/F", we are no longer getting the above warning.
Ok, as it turns out this issue is unrelated. I really don't have any other ideas as of now. Do you have any spectrum analyzer or other receiver that can be used to detect if the BTS is actually transmitting? A USRP would also do...
