New feature: twrtp in OsmoBTS

Dear Osmocom community, There is a new feature in OsmoBTS: ability to use twrtp+twjit instead of ortp. The patches were merged to master just over 24 h ago, and should now be included in the official nightly builds for Debian-style distros and for sysmoBTS hw. The new vty setting is 'rtp library' under 'bts 0' node: if you set 'rtp library twrtp', the BTS application will use the new twrtp library to operate the RTP endpoint that goes with every TCH activated for a speech or CSD call, and it will use twjit component of twrtp for the tricky task of mapping received RTP packets to ticks of the internal fixed time base used for radio Tx - the jitter buffer function. When twrtp library is selected, the old 'rtp jitter-buffer' setting will have no effect - it is specific to the 3rd party ortp library which twrtp seeks to replace. Instead the way to configure the amount of jitter buffering (trade-off between added latency and ability to tolerate more jitter) and other twjit algorithm tunings is via the new 'twjit' vty node that appears under 'bts 0'. The algorithm used by twjit, its theoretical basis and its tunable parameters are thoroughly documented. The document source lives in libosmo-netif along with the code; a PDF rendition can be found here: https://www.freecalypso.org/TW-doc/twrtp-guide-osmo.pdf My original reasons for developing twrtp+twjit and getting this facility integrated into Osmocom were and are: 1) I tried to understand the algorithm used by ortp for the jitter buffer function, and found it resistant to understanding. I naturally seek to eliminate non-understandable black boxes from my GSM networks, hence the project was undertaken to implement a replacement library whose algorithmic design is exactly what I want for high-quality GSM networks. 2) ortp is not a simple lean library, instead it drags a long chain of further dependencies along with it, many dealing with functionality that was never used in Osmocom. This unjustified increase in the list of dependencies is a major pain point for minimalist systems/distros such as Slackware. When I embarked on this project in the Northern hemisphere summer of 2024, I assumed that everyone else in Osmocom was perfectly happy with ortp and that my networks would be the only ones using the alternative of twrtp+twjit. However, when twrtp and twjit were undergoing code review for integration into libosmo-netif, Pau indicated that others in Osmocom have also become somewhat dissatisfied with ortp external dependency, and very surprisingly to me, expressed a desire to eventually stop using ortp and use only twrtp instead. It does make sense, though: twrtp and twjit are built on top of libosmocore primitives (msgb, osmo_io etc) and specifically written for use in Osmocom environment, while ortp is non-native... However, before there can be any talk about twrtp becoming the new default or removing support for ortp, the new config of OsmoBTS using twrtp+twjit needs to be tested a lot more extensively, by more than just me, in network environments that may be very different from mine. This invitation to test twrtp in OsmoBTS is the primary purpose of the present post. For everyone who feels brave or has some spare cycles, please try setting 'rtp library twrtp' in your OsmoBTS vty config, and then test some voice (or CSD) calls in your environment. Tests in GSM networks that aren't self-contained (can do more than internal switching between an MO leg and an MT leg inside the same network) would be particularly interesting: in a self-contained Osmocom network with internal MNCC the only possible RTP path is osmo-bts -> multiple osmo-mgw packet forwarder instances -> osmo-bts, while networks with external connectivity can be much more varied. Nokia LAPD problems and renaming

Dear Community, We reached a bit of an challenge with the Nokia BTS support we are working on, so before I make a commit, let me explain what the problem is, hopefully someone has a better idea. The Nokia BTS does not initiate a LAPD connection for the RSL links even when the BTS finished configuring and testing the TRX units. As the support for the Nokia BTSes was mainly done on the smaller InSite units, this problem did not presented itself, as even after the TRX was reset, the recovery is so fast that it is within the LAPD timeout. But with the bigger macro variant (UltraSite), this issue is now presenting itself: after the BTS is configured via OML, we wait for the CONF_COMPL from the BTS, before we start the RSL bootstrap. Problem is that the BCCH TRX needs a RESET during the bootstrap and compared to the smaller InSite or MetroSite (both are so called "integrated TRX units"), the UltraSite TRX takes 10-15 seconds to be ready, and there is no way for us to know when this happens: no OML messages, no RSL LAPD init triggered by the BTS itself, so nothing to trigger on. And by this amount of time the RSL LAPD times out and the TRX is never bootstrapped. So at the moment the cheap hacky solution is to just increase the RSL LAPD N203 timer from 4 to 20 seconds, this way the LAPD does not timeout and all the TRXes are bootstrapped properly. Would this be acceptable for just the Nokia family? Or a configurable reset timer is more preferred, like we already have for the OML part? Please let me know your opinions. The second thing is more of a suggestion: as the existing Nokia codebase can support much more than just the *Site family (both older and newer units can be supported by the same dialect), I would suggest to rename it to "bts_nokia.c" as the name suggests only the Site family is supported. I personally did not tried it, but if anyone has access to newer (or older) units like a Flexi BTS, Flexi Multiradio and Multiradio10 (all with E1 interfaces) please let me know. Regards, Csaba

Front and back sides of an MSC

Hello Osmocom community, I have a question about terminology that is not really specific to Osmocom, but is specific to GSM/3G/etc cellular industry, or whatever is left of it. An MSC in a GSM or 3G or any other circuit-switched cellular network has two sides: one side facing the RAN (A interface in GSM, IuCS in 3G), the other side facing PSTN or ISDN or BICC or SIP-I or whatever the fixed telephone network may be. My question: is there a general industry-wide agreement as to which side should be called the front and which should be called the back? To me it seems intuitive to refer to the A/IuCS side of an MSC as the front and the PSTN/ISDN/BICC/SIP-I side of the same MSC as the back. However, I am just one person, and I have no idea whether or not my view is intuitive to others. And it would even worse if the opposite convention happens to be widely used... Hence I am asking this community, in the hope that someone with more industry experience would know how telco network engineers casually refer to RAN-facing and fixed-network-facing sides of an MSC. For a long time I had the idea of building ThemWi MSC as a modular system (multiple processes talking to each other via sockets) with a stripped-down OsmoMSC derivative as the "central" component, and with a radically different placement of MSC-MGW. However, as I started working on more detailed design, I realized a major flaw in my originally envisioned architecture: my original approach to MSC-MGW would break TFO for AMR, specifically the dialogue between TFO-aware BTS and the TRAU equivalent in the MGW. I am now spinning a new architecture in my head, one which tentatively includes two dissimilar MGWs in the MSC. If my front vs back terminology is valid, then the front MGW (talking to AoIP user plane) would perform speech transcoding but become a transparent pass-through for CSD (basically a software-only, IP-based equivalent of a hardware TCSM colocated at the MSC site), while the back MGW would be a transparent pass-through for speech calls, but turn into a complex IWF for CSD. This tentative architecture exactly matches the placement of speech transcoding and CSD IWF functions in traditional hardware MSCs of TDM-based, before-AoIP world. But I need to know if I should keep these front and back terms, or swap them the other way around. M~

cmd2 update causing pySim-shell to fail

Hi all, Just wanted to share an issue and a quick workaround I found for it in case anyone else has the same problem. I believe a cmd2 update is causing pySim-shell to fail.
