Hi all,
I was pondering to start a regular Osmocom meeting (monthly or bi-weekly) in Berlin.
The idea would be not only to converge the existing developers in Berlin (zecke, roh, prom, tobias, peter, kevin, myself, ...) but to also try to share some knowledge and excitement with other interested hackers in the wider community.
A split format for the event might make sense: Have a more or less organized 45min talk about one particular topic + 15min discussion and then switch to an informal meeting style without any particular topic or moderator.
For the first half there is a long list of topics intended at informing people about the status and capabilities of the respective projects: OsmocomBB, OsmoTETRA, OsmoGMR, SIMtrace, etc.
Regarding the venue, I would suggest to hold it at the Berlin CCC.
What do you generally think about this?
What day of the week should we be aiming at? Tuesday and Thursday is generally not a good idea, as those are already occupied with other events.
If you think it's a good idea, I would request/register the event with the CCC Berlin.
Regards, Harald

I say go for it. Bi-weekly sounds good.
I would say monthly is more realistic. But I'm also fine with bi-weekly.

I like Wednesday.
Me too.

The idea sounds great to me too.

Bi-weekly would give more chances to people who travel a lot, to at least make it to it once a month.

Hi,
I don't think this is a good idea. It kills the local atmosphere without having any real benefit. Every decision/code and most likely slides will be public anyway.

+1
Cheers,
Harald,
Looks like a great idea to promote open-source in telecom and recruit more devs into the community. Not to mention all other goals. I wish you all the best in setting up this event and I wish I lived in Berlin. :)
I have to schedule a new run of my seminars on GSM and OpenBTS in Moscow as well. Hopefully it will bring more attention from Russian audience as well.

That's a pretty nice idea!

I would probably be in favor of Wednesday. Monthly sounds good to me. I'm not sure if bi-weekly is a bit too optimistic when it comes to people preparing exciting stuff talks. I may be totally wrong though.
Cheers Nico

Great, then we have already three people in favor of Wednesday (which would also work out fine for me).

We could meet every 2 weeks but only have a talk once par month as a compromise. But then, even some basic intro to all of the Osmocom (sub)projects would keep us busy beyond the first year...
After all, this is not supposed to be a free training program in mobile communications, but something interactive to get more people (more easily) involved...
To quote myself...

I've now inquired with CCC Berlin, people there seem to be fine with a bi-weekly meeting on wednesday. I told them that one CCCB member would be present at every meeting. This would likely be me (unless I'm travelling) so we have to see that somebody else (dexter, prom, roh, zecke, ...) can fulfill that role during other meetings.
The first meeting thus will be next wednesday, April 11. I suggest we meet at 7pm. A more official announcement will follow.

monthly soung good. bi-weekly could also be a good way to invite/welcome new-comers and introduce them to osmocom (which has 1000 subproject), for individual presentation, workshop, tutorial, ... something informal, so to help in the beginnings.
The idea would be not only to converge the existing developers in Berlin (zecke, roh, prom, tobias, peter, kevin, myself, ...) but to also try to share some knowledge and excitement with other interested hackers in the wider community.
