RFC: unit tests for kernel GTP module

Dear GTP-interested folks, I would love to somehow get towards some degree of unit testing (or even "continuous integration") for teh kernel GTP code. We currently have the original code in the kernel, we had some recent small fixes and now are getting more patches into place. With relatively few active users out there (and probably none of them in production yet), it's particularly easy to introduce regressions while working on the code. Also, having tested new code even against a test set with limited covrage could help to get more confidence in new patches and thus get them merged sooner. Using tools like sgsnemu of OpenGGSN and the command line tools included in libgtpnl, it should be possibel to cook up some scripts for testing. Even the most basic set of tests would be an improvement over what we have now. One could also think about pcap replay to test with hand-crafted or real-world packets from other GTP implementations. As much as I'd like to put something like this into place myself, I don't think I will be able to work much on this in the near future. The GTP module at this point is a pure hobby and contrary to some years ago while I started it, I don't have any contract work in the GTP area at this point, so other projects currently unfortunately get more attention. So in case somebody among the GTP-interested parties (Travelping, OAI, ...) would want to do something in terms of testing, I'd be more than happy if somebody would step ahead. Otherwise it's all just vapourware going to end up on my ever-growing TODO list :/ Also, if netdev folks have some ideas/pointers about possible frameworks/tools for this kind of testing [it must exist for at least some other kernel networking code?]: Please let me know. I'd be interested to have a look if there's something that can be used as a basis (starting network namespaces, sending/transmitting packets, test case startup/teardown, ...) My "old school" approach would have been to start one or multiple user-mode-linux kernels (those that are to be tested), and then have scripts that set up a gtp socket and gtp tunnels via the libgtp command line tools, and throw packets at that. But I'm sure there must be quite powerful frameworks for that kind of testing in the 21st century? How do other tunneling implementations handle this? Adding doxygen style comments to header files

Hi, it came up again in gerrit again. Currently the osmocom style states doxygen style comments should be done in the .c file. Doxygen are those comments: /*! a brief description of the function * \param something Some description of the use * \return 0 if ... */ Doxygen takes those comments and generates a html documentation of the code. I would like to change it to have those in the headers files instead (when the function in included in a header file). When using the doxygen comments only for doyxen, for sure, there isn't a difference between having it in .c or in .h files. But when using IDEs or language servers, they usually only parses headers files and the .c files of the current active project (e.g. osmo-sgsn), but not the .c files of other projects (libosmocore). On the downside I only see the problem of increasing the size of header files, but I don't see an issue in here. Any thoughts? Best, lynxis

This patch series includes some netns-related improvements and fixes for rtnetlink, to make link creation more intuitive: 1) Creating link in another net namespace doesn't conflict with link names in current one. 2) Refector rtnetlink link creation. Create link in target namespace directly. So that # ip link add netns ns1 link-netns ns2 tun0 type gre ... will create tun0 in ns1, rather than create it in ns2 and move to ns1. And don't conflict with another interface named "tun0" in current netns. Patch 01 avoids link name conflict in different netns. To achieve 2), there're mainly 3 steps: - Patch 02 packs newlink() parameters into a struct, including the original "src_net" along with more netns context. No semantic changes are introduced. - Patch 03 ~ 09 converts device drivers to use the explicit netns extracted from params. - Patch 10 ~ 11 removes the old netns parameter, and converts rtnetlink to create device in target netns directly. Patch 12 ~ 13 adds some tests for link name and link netns. --- BTW please note there're some issues found in current code: - In amt_newlink() drivers/net/amt.c: amt->net = net; ... amt->stream_dev = dev_get_by_index(net, ... Uses net, but amt_lookup_upper_dev() only searches in dev_net. So the AMT device may not be properly deleted if it's in a different netns from lower dev. - In lowpan_newlink() in net/ieee802154/6lowpan/core.c: wdev = dev_get_by_index(dev_net(ldev), nla_get_u32(tb[IFLA_LINK])); Looks for IFLA_LINK in dev_net, but in theory the ifindex is defined in link netns.
