But with this patch we're silently dropping `EF.SMPP` as if it was not present; we're not even logging an error. And we're not catching other possible kinds of exceptions here, like `ConstructError`, so this does not solve the problem fundamentally.

Looking at the backtrace you provided, the `IndexError` comes from our
pyosmocom code, not from construct. I checked the related code path and it looks like the problem has been fixed in https://gerrit.osmocom.org/c/python/pyosmocom/+/41731? I think we can abandon this patch.

This would break ABI. You need to add a osmo_cpu_sched_vty_init2() API instead, whith a new signature returning int.

This is not about discussing or ranting, but about documenting/explaining your changes (ideally in COMMIT_MSG), so that others could understand them. I was not closely following development of this API, so it was not clear to me what's wrong with the existing logic, and now I do understand the problem.
> I welcome you to experiment with it to find a way that works well with this super weird code in place.
Harald's idea with automatic naming looks good to me. I guess it was simply not foreseen that classes would try to override the automatic naming. And it's actually easy to improve the logic instead of removing it: we can check if the `name` is already assigned and generate one automatically only if it's not. But I am not sure if it's worth it given that all classes seem to be setting `name` manually. @laforge@osmocom.org what do you think?
> This here is an instance of very annoying code review, [...]
You may find this annoying, but do **do** need to understand the context in order to help with getting **your** patches merged. Honestly speaking, getting such emotional bursts in response to explain something does not make my task easy at all...

We call len(), which is implemented via a `__len__()` attribute.
If you run len() on something without a `__len__()`, then the program crashes -- but we just want to do treat non-lists like an empty list (IIRC)
In python there is no plain way to determine whether a class is a list type, the easiest is to make sure a `__len__` function is present before calling len(). If there is no `__len__` then set a local variable to 0. using that is safe.

Exactly.
We are here reading an example template from GSMA and get an exception.
This should by definition be correct content that we should not raise on.
In this instance it seems to me that our code is raising on a validly empty value, because AFAICT when it looks for padding with `if foo[-1] == 'f'` it fails to check for an empty foo first.

Change subject: personalization: indicate default ParamSource per ConfigurableParameter
......................................................................
personalization: indicate default ParamSource per ConfigurableParameter
Add default_source class members pointing to ParamSource classes to all
ConfigurableParameter subclasses.
This is useful to automatically set up a default ParamSource for a given
ConfigurableParameter subclass, during user interaction to produce a
batch personalization.
For example, if the user selects a Pin1 parameter, a calling program can
implicitly set this to a RandomDigitSource, which will magically make it
work the way that most users need.
BTW, default_source and default_value can be combined to configure a
matching ParamSource instance:
my_source = MyParam.default_source.from_str( MyParam.default_value )
