PS1: I would like to raise the concern here that we usually put everything in the .gitignore in the root directory. IMHO that makes it a lot easier to figure out why stuff doesn't end up in git without having to look recursively in gitignore files.

I'm not necessarily against this, but I'd like to know what others think about it beforehand to try to reach a general consensus.
