PS1: it's possible to do this, but in general it is of course desirable to have a check at one given point in the code, rather than copy-pasted everwhere. We have more than enough copy+paste in the osmo-bts code base already, and I'd prefer to see that reduced, rather than expanded...

Will have to look at the next patches to see if I think it's sufficient benefit to accept that cost of copy-pasting.
