PS2: just a random comment: As we do a lot of io_uring in libosmocore and programs using it in recent times, it might also make sense to look at io_uring here to reduce syscall overhead? I've never used io_uring from python so far, but there seems to be at least one library for it: https://pypi.org/project/liburing/ - while it states "alpha" quality, it does claim to support both Cython and Python.
