(ETSI EN 300 175-7 Ch. A6)
Good news, everyone [tm],
after several years of break since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, it is my
great pleasure to finally announce OsmoDevCon2024, our (previously
annual) Osmocom Developer Conference for developers, by developers.
The conference is held
*May 3rd through May 6th, 2024*
at the
*Van der Valk Hotel Berlin/Brandenburg*
conference hotel.
Contrary to our past OsmoDevCons (which have all been rather low budget,
grass roots events), laforge felt that particularly after the long
COVID-related break, it would be nice to do something slightly more
fancy: Stay together with the entire group for four days, in a
conference hotel.
sysmocom (and hopefully soon other) sponsors will cover the accomodation
and conference cost for any volunteers contributing to Osmocom only in
their spare time.
If you have contributed to Osmocom projects in the past (writing code,
funding, documentation, packaging or related activities) you are
eligible to attend. Please register no later than March 1st on the
OsmoDevCon2024 wiki page at
https://osmocom.org/projects/osmo-dev-con/wiki/OsmoDevCon2024
At the same time, the Call for Proposals is open at
https://pretalx.sysmocom.de/osmodevcon2024/cfp
I'm sure after several years of a break, everyone must have hacked on
(or learned about) many exciting things they would like to share. Any
and all proposals are greatly aprreciated. Please don't wait too long so
we can put together a draft schedule ASAP.
Looking forward to seeing many of you again,
Harald

Hello various Osmocom mailing lists,
the official Osmocom binary packages will not be built anymore for the
following distributions starting at 2024-02:
* Raspberry Pi OS 64-bit (use Debian_12 etc. instead)
* Ubuntu 23.04 (Ubuntu 23.10 and LTS 20.04/22.04 feeds are available)
* openSUSE 15.4 (openSUSE Tumbleweed feed is available)
* Debian Testing (Debian Unstable and 12-10 feeds are available)
For Raspberry Pi OS 64-bit users, make sure to adjust your
/etc/apt/sources.list.d as described here to switch to a Debian
aarch64 feed:
https://osmocom.org/projects/cellular-infrastructure/wiki/Latest_Builds
See the new linux distributions article for information on how long we
plan to keep building packages for each distribution:

Dear Osmocom community,
while many people with a long history in FOSS development have no issues
at all with mailing lists as primary form of engaging with their
community, they have undoubtedly fallen out of fashion in favor of
various chat/messaging systems or web based forums.
In Osmocom, we've just launched an installation of the discourse forum
software available at https://discourse.osmocom.org/ providing an
alternative to our traditional mailing lists at https://lists.osmocom.org/
We're looking forward to see whether this web-based approach will
facilitate more and/or other people to engage with the Osmocom
developer/contributor community.
Feel free to join and get the discussions started. If there's a need
for more categories or sub-categories, just let one of the moderators
know and we can help with that.
The old mailing lists will continue to remain available for those who
prefer them.

Building wired test setups for mobile communications
Particularly in lab and test setup involving cellular technology there
is often a need for wired (coaxial) connection of cellular equipment,
such as connecting a number of UEs (phones/modems) with one or multiple
cellular base stations. For example, this is the only way to get defined
power levels and test the actual transmit power or receive sensitivity
of a device. The talk will cover how to build such test setups from
parts like coaxial cabling, attenuators, RF splitter/combiners,
duplexers, etc.

Hello various Osmocom mailing lists,
as previously announced (https://osmocom.org/news/191):

Hi all,
Vintage Computing Festival Berlin 2022 is scheduled for October 8+9, 2022
It would be great to put together an exhibit there, re-using the small
rack based setup that was at the 2019 CCC congress (Auerswald PBX,
Freeswitch, Portmaster3) as well as a number of modems / ISDN-TA etc. to
show BBS dial-up and the like.
I have all the equipment and can work on the preparation/setup, but I
think it would be very helpful if this was not a one-man show but if
somebody would be around to help particularly on-site when there are
visitors looking for demo, explanation, help, ...
Registration deadline is September 7, as indicated at
https://vcfb.de/2022/call_for_participation.htm
Before we go into what we could/should demo, I would like to get a
feeling if anyone is interested in helping out.

For more than a decade, pySim-prog has been the tool to
configure/program SIM cards in research/lab/private cellular

and parameters. There is a limit as to how far one can go with
stuffing everything into command line arguments.
In 2021, pySim-shell was created as the next generation tool. It
features interactive navigation around the file system, editing
capabilities, backup and restore of all [known] files, ...

"Privacy in residential applications is a desirable marketing option."
(ETSI EN 300 175-7 Ch. A6)
There is an urgent need to migrate our most important public
infrastructure to a new server, and I will be doing that on
*Sunday, July 19 2020*, starting about 9am CEST.
The migration involves redmine (main osmocom.org website), jenkins, gerrit,
git, and cgit.
In theory, the migration should be quick. I would expect (significantly)
less than one hour of downtime. However, we all know Murphys law.
Services not affected are mail (including mailman lists), ftp, dns. So in case
of doubt, we can still use mailing lists to communicate.
In case anyone urgently needs osmocom source code on Sunday morning
during the downtime: There are public mirrors available on github.
Regards,
Harald

Dear Osmocom community,
the first schedule of the 2018 incarnation of OsmoCon 2018 has been announced,
see http://osmocom.org/news/99 for the announcment and
https://pretalx.sysmocom.de/osmocon2018/schedule/ for the actual schedule.
At OsmoCon, we are not targetting developers, but more the wider community
and Osmocom users. It would be great to meet many of you and hear more
about your relation to Osmocom.
Tickets are available from https://pretix.sysmocom.de/sysmocom/osmocon2018/,
and until August 31st the early bird discount still applies.
For those with a community / "just for fun" background and no employer
that would cover the ticket, we have a number of subsidized community discount
vouchers available. See the OsmoCon 2018 wiki page at
https://osmocom.org/projects/osmo-dev-con/wiki/OsmoCon2018
for more information.
Looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible in roughly two
months from now,
Harald Welte

"Privacy in residential applications is a desirable marketing option."
(ETSI EN 300 175-7 Ch. A6)
Dear Osmocom community,
one of the main difficulty with OsmoCon 2017 last year was that nobody
submitted talks / discussions within the deadline, early enough to allow
for proper planning.
This lead to the situation where the sysmocom team had to come up with
a schedule/agenda on their own. Later on *much after the CfP deadline*,
people then squeezed in talks, making the overall schedule too full.
It is up to you to avoid this situation again in 2018 by submitting your
talk *RIGHT NOW*. We will be very strict regarding late submissions. So
if you would like to shape the Agenda of OsmoCon 2018, this is your
chance. Please use it.
We will have to create a schedule soon, as [almost] nobody will register
to a conference unless the schedule is known. If there's not sufficient
contribution in terms of CfP response from the wider community, don't
complain later that 90% of the talks are from sysmocom team members and
only about the Cellular Network Infrastructure topics.
You have been warned. Please make your CfP submission in time at
https://pretalx.sysmocom.de/osmocon2018/cfp
before the CfP deadline on
*2018-05-30 23:59 (Europe/Berlin)*
Thanks for your kind attention. Looking forward to meet with the
community at OsmoCon 2018 in October.
Regards,
Harald
