Hi all!
Thanks again for everyone attending OsmoDevCon, particularly to everyone who contributed to the event by a presentation or discussion.
It is always a huge pleasure to meet all of you once per year at OsmoDevCon, and I hope we can continue that tradition for a long time to come.
In terms of improvements for the next event:
1) "Framework Schedule"
I think we should move towards a more defined "framework schedule".
What was a bit sad this time was for example that we had quite a number of topics (like the talks on the Globalstar signal decode including the details on its PHY, or the OsmocomBB SDR PHY, which would have been great to have Tom Tsou's feedback on - but where he didn't attend.
This is of course not particularly about Tom, but the fundamental "problem" is that we are covering a wide range of topics from electronics to SDR to physical layers all the way up to the core network, and that not even limited to one particular system/technology. And even while everyone might be interested in all of that (I am!), not everyone is able to follow the discussions in depth, or simply have the time to attend all of that.
So in the future, I think we should all make a better effort to submit talks/topics in advance, and schedule them either completely (like a regular conference with a pre-defined schedule), or at least schedule them on days. So that we will have e.g. a "SDR + PHY + Satellite day" or something like that, where then all related topics are, and people with specific focus area can attend that. Equally, a "GSM/UMTS RAN+CN day" and a "Miscellaneous day" or the like.
What do you think of the above proposal?
2) "Make use of multiple rooms"
Right now we're not really using the second "front room" for anything but storing luggage. The idea would be to leave the large table in there and have it as a "hackcenter" where people can simply work on their projects (and talk about it) even while talks are going on next door. This way we can also fit some more chairs into the main room (due to less table space.
We could of course also search for another venue, which is larger and has more rooms which allows for some growth, but then as indicated we don't really have that many more applications of people to attend OsmoDevCon so far.
What are your thoughts on this?

This would be a good idea. This year there were a lot of talks but nearly no time to just talk with each other or work on projects, especially on Saturday (in the years before the evenings were usually "free" and used for that). A schedule (it does not need to be detailed on the minute) would solve this.
- "Make use of multiple rooms"
I agree to do that. People could leave a talk they are not that much interested in and go into this room to work on their projects. I don't think we should change the location of the venue, I like it and there is enough space in my opinion, especially if we would make use of the second room.
Best regards, Dieter

Right. I think there is a mismatch of levels of knowledge and experience in various areas, Some people have been working on things for years, and some of us present are new to it. That doesn't indicate a lack of interest, but then the presentations at osmodevcon doesn't feel like the place to ask some more basic questions.
I have attended two osmodevcons now because of the work with rhizomatica and GSM. That doesn't mean at all that I am not interested in other projects, I have always been fascinated by radio. So it's also an interesting aspect of the devcon, that there is not really the option to "skip" a talk, so you also find out things that you didn't know that you didn't know.. Other people for sure, may not share that interest.
So in the future, I think we should all make a better effort to submit talks/topics in advance, and schedule them either completely
Right, it might be useful also in order to do a little targeted preparation, like some basic pre research on the topic of say radio ripple might have allowed me to get more from that talk, rather than looking up things during the talk. -Not just at a conference, of course, but these days one often has some attention on the local device/screen and some on the talk/projection, or whatever else is going on. Some people are very good at this, but I have yet to meet a human who can TRUELY multi-task in this fashion.
- "Make use of multiple rooms"
Generally at conferences we often see talks finished with an "If there are any other questions, you can always find the speaker during the event.." During the breaks at OsmoDevCon, one can get into interesting conversations about things, but in the interests of prevention of cruelty to thermos flasks, it is usually cut short. A space where one could ask and/or share ideas on other peoples projects, would be great. I'm all for more time to talk to each other.
The couch and round table is not very comfortable anyway, It is kind of the wrong height, making me want to actually put the lap-top on the lap, but then the table is in the way. And then of course, if you try to sit around the other side of that table, the result is total congestion. I never looked, but I assume there is a door that closes to the second room? There is also a beamer in there? so I suppose even a further presentation could be done, re what I wrote above. Or one could always invite CCC VOC to stream room 1 to room 2? :-)
All in all, a good proposal. I would go for it.

Hi Harald,
- "Framework Schedule"
I think we should move towards a more defined "framework schedule".
That sounds like a good idea. I generally was happy to hear all the talks, but some of them were too technical to really learn something from them. Way above my knowledge level in that topic. I could also have done some work then. If we have a schedule, I can be sure to not miss something I am interested in while working in another room. And of course it's good for all that cannot attend on every days to be able to choose the topics they want to hear.
- "Make use of multiple rooms"
Makes sense. But I think only with the scheduling of presentations. Because if you are separated from the main room you would likely miss something cool if you don't always check what topic is currently talked about.
We could of course also search for another venue, which is larger and has more rooms which allows for some growth, but then as indicated we...
To be honest, I really liked the location and its atmosphere (and all the different beverages). When using more rooms the space should be sufficient.
This was my first time at an OsmoDevCon and I am glad I was a part of it. I learned so many new stuff and met new interesting people. Thanks :)

Yeah, the same opinion here.
That was great three days, thanks! Hope to see you guys again in the next year.
With best regards, Vadim Yanitskiy.
