This is by the way something that I've been also seeing with patches
against the kernel gtp in recent years: People submit patches but are
not explaining the use cases, so it's hard to judge how relevant this
really is to most users.

Thinking of this a few more minutes: In my opinion the usual use case
would be to perform RSS distribution based on a (hash of) the TEID,
possibly in combination with the destination IP(v4/v6) address of the
outer IP header, and possibly also including the [outer] destination UDP
port number.
The latter could likely be always included in the hash, as either it is
the standard port (like in all public standard GTPU traffic) and would
hence not contribute to the distribution across the hash function, or it
would be a non-standard port number in some kind of private/custom
deployment, and then you would want to use it to differentiate traffic,
as otherwise you wouldn't use non-standard ports.

Why do we have TEID based hashing only in GTP-C? The User plane in
GTP-U is normally what you'd want to load-share across CPUs/nodes/...
That's where you have thousands to millions more packets than GTP-C.

Firstly, what I want to convey is that the structure of each of these
packets is entirely different. Therefore, in terms of ethtool, since
packets with the same structure are considered a flow, I understand
that it is necessary to define such different things (I actually think
that the people at Intel are doing it that way).
Let me first explain the difference between GTPC and GTPU.
The UDP ports are different in GTPC and GTPU.
What's further different is that in the case of GTPC, GTPv2-C is used,
and in the case of GTPU, GTPv1-U is used, which are mainstream in
current mobile communications.
Especially the uniqueness of GTPC communication varies according to
the processing phase.
CSR (Create Session Request) starts processing from a state where TEID
is not included. Therefore, it is separated into cases where packets
have TEID and where they don’t.
Of course, there are cases where we want to specially process only the
communication without TEID, and just creating a session is one of the
more vulnerable parts of the mobile network.
EH stands for Extension Header.
This is the case with GTPU packets compatible with 5G. If it’s the
Flow Director, it reads a parameter related to QoS called QFI.
Without this, it is impossible to process GTPv1 packets compatible with 5G.
Furthermore, this Extension Header has parts where the shape differs
depending on UL/DL, which is called the PDU Session Container.
Specific use cases basically apply to services that terminate GTP itself.
The structure of processing in RSS with ethtool until now was to
select a fixed shape of packets and parameters of those packets to
perform RSS.
Conforming to this format is why it becomes so numerous.

packet are also included.

I also think that it should not be limited to GTP-C. However, as I
wrote in the email earlier, all the flows written are different in
packet structure, including GTP-C. In the semantics of ethtool, I
thought it was correct to pass a fixed packet structure and the
controllable parameters for it. At least, the Intel ice driver that I
modified is already like that.
IMHO that kind of explanation should be in the comment
next to the
#define (for all of them) rather than "hash only". That way it's
obvious to the reader what they do, rather than having to guess.
Regarding what should be hashed, this is a complex case. It will also
answer other questions, but for example, if you read this Intel ice
driver, there are cases where you can manipulate the port of the Inter
packet. I think this varies depending on the driver to be implemented.
Note that these comments follow the existing code of ethtool.

All these functionalities explained up to this point are useful when
you want to process data communication from the mobile network at UPF,
PGW, etc.
Jakub-san might be concerned because there are many flows. If the
number of these flows seems too much, it might be good to reduce the
cases of EH_UL/DL and GTPC only.
I made this implementation to fully utilize the GTP features in Intel
ICE for RSS, so there are many flows.
The reason is that UL/DL can be substituted with EH (looking at the
implementation in Intel ICE, both UL/DL seem to be dont care), and for
GTPC without TEID, originally it should be hashed with IMSI etc. when
doing RSS, but it doesn’t seem to be done right now.
In other words, if it seems better to reduce them, it might be good to
only incorporate gtp4|6, gtpc4|6, gtpue4|6.

So only in case the user intentionally configures
their network to use
the same IP address for GTP-C and GTP-U traffic one will need to start
distinguishing GTP-C and GTP-U on one host/NIC with the RSS mechanism:
Steer the GTP-C traffic to the control plane instance on one CPU and
spread the GTP-U traffic via hash function to multiple other
queues/CPUs. I personally think it's short-sighted to use identical IPs
for control and user plane, as it means you can never scale out to
multiple machines without introducing some kind of dedicated load
balancer in front. But assuming some people still want to do it that
way: Yes, then you need the feature to split GTP-C form GTP-U via RSS to
scale well.
I don't deny that using the same IP is short-sighted. However, in
environments such as Private 5G and Private LTE, it is possible that a
small mobile core OSS (e.g., NextEPC, Free5GC, etc.) is placed. Even
if the addresses are separated, processing on the same computer
instance is a possible scenario, so there are practical use cases.

But this follows the existing design of Ethtool.

implementation is divided into IPv4 and v6.

I've been able to organize various comments and I think you've
understood what is operated by the patch I sent.
Now, here, I’d like to propose two policies for the next version of the patch.
1. Keep this patch as is and write the necessary supplementary
comments (of course, nits fix will be done).
The good thing about this is that it can handle detailed use cases (as
Harald-san understood)
There might be something more pleasant than expected use cases. The
bad thing is the multitude of flow formats. Considering 6G, it may
increase a bit more.
2.Limit the rx-flow-hash flow type to gtpu4|6 and gtpc4|6, and rewrite
to implicitly execute the previous function.
we will add comments (There will be fewer comments than plan 1).
In other words, in Intel Ice, the proposal has the following semantics.
gtpu4|6: GTPU_V(4|6)_FLOW + GTPU_EH_V(4|6)_FLOW
gtpc4|6: GTPC_V(4|6)_FLOW + GTPC_TEID_V(4|6)_FLOW
The good thing is that it seems easy for users to use, and the format
of the GTP-related flow is less likely to increase or decrease in the
future.
The bad thing is that it may not be able to handle detailed use cases.
Please let me know which one, 1 or 2, you prefer.

For instance, there are PGWs that have the capability to separate the
termination of communication of 4G LTE users into Control and User
planes (C/U).
This is quite convenient from a scalability perspective. In fact, in
5G UPF, the communication is explicitly only on the User plane
(Uplane).
Therefore, services are expected to receive only GTPU traffic (e.g.,
PGW-U, UPF) or only GTPC traffic (e.g., PGW-C). Hence, there arises a
necessity to use only GTPU.
If we do not distinguish packets into Control/User (C/U) with options
like gtp4|6, I can conceive scenarios where performance tuning becomes
challenging.
For example, in cases where we want to process only the control
communication (GTPC) using Flow Director on specific CPUs, while
processing GTPU on the remaining cores.
In scenarios like IoT, where user communication is minimal but the
volume of devices is vast, the control traffic could substantially
increase. Thus, this might also be possible in reverse.
In short, this pertains to being mindful of CPU core affinity.
If we were to propose again, setting aside considerations specific to
Intel, I believe, considering the users of ethtool, the smallest units
should be gtpu4|6 and gtpc4|6.
Regarding Extension Headers and such, I think it would be more
straightforward to handle them implicitly.
What does everyone else think?

yes.
Can someone reasonably use the same UDP port for both
types of traffic?
I don't think so. In the entire 3GPP protocol world, the UDP port numbers
for GTP-U and GTP-C are fixed. The various signaling protocols allow you to
communicate the IPv4/v6 address and TEID of tunnel endpoints, but never allow
you to communicate the port number - which hence must always be the well-known port
(2123 for GTP-C + 2152 for GTP-U).
Of course somebody could do whatever they want in some kind of internal interface
not required to interoperate with any other equipment/implementation/operator, but
I'd consider it not falling in your question of "reasonable use".
