yes, most likely the I/O pin function modes need to be set correctly.
It might be best to try to read them from a (running) normal firmware.
Today I tried to modify the Calypso UART driver for
the MTK UART,
but currently I'm stuck with a strange hang somewhere in the driver,
maybe I'll look after it tomorrow.
if you have any specific questions, please le me know. I haven't yet
checked how compatible the UART types of the two devices are.
