does it really make sense to patch those specific error messages rather than introducing some generi […] I'm not sure I'm following you. Routing Failure is a specific error-message/primitive or however you want to call it, between SCRC and SCOC/SCLC. See "Figure 1/Q.714 −−−− SCCP overview".

Also, by looking at the flow diagrams it can clearly be seen that the messages are expected to be async.
