As you can see from previous mails, dexter will be working on a driver for the SIM card reader shortly. So please coordinate with him if you intend to work in the same area. I think if you want to play with OsmocomBB, you should get started by first getting a compatible phone, building the existing codebase and playing around with it. After that you can check again with this mailing list what's the status of of the SIM card reader driver and which parts of e.g. iso7816 still need to be implemented.
