Dear OsmoDevCon 2024 participants,
thanks a lot for attending and contributing by your talks, discussions,
comments and conversations. It was a pleasure meeting all of you
[again] and I do hope to see all of you again at another conference
soon.
Lost + Found
============
During teardown, we found that somebody has left behind a Lenovo USB-C
laptop power supply (date code in year 2018). It was on the desk
roughly in the area where Philipp was sitting. However, Philipp checked
and it was not his. If anyone is missing theirs, please let me know and
we can see how to get it to you.
Hotel room payment
==================
I hope everything worked out as expected during checkout. If anyone was
unexpectedly asked to pay for the room, please let me know. Only those
working for non-sysmocom companies with an "osmocom related dayjob"
should have been asked to pay the room directly to the hotel.
Invoicing
=========
For those of you in an "osmocom related dayjob" who are expected to
cover the daily conference rates of the hotel: sysmocom will wait until
receiving the final hotel invoice and then issue invoices to your
respective employer.
Video Recordings
================
The recordings still need to be cut before they are published on
media.ccc.de. This will likely take a few weeks I'm planning to release
an osmocom.org news item (RSS feed) and post here when they are
available.
Thanks
======
I'd like to again thank our Sponsors AMN (Gold Sponsor), WaveMobile
(Silver Sponsor) and sysmocom (Silver Sponsor) for generous financial
support making the event in its 2024 format/venue possible.
I'd also like to thank the c3voc team (specifically derpeter and Jake)
for recording / editing / publishing the talks.
Regards,
Harald

"Privacy in residential applications is a desirable marketing option."
(ETSI EN 300 175-7 Ch. A6)
Hello OsmoDevCon participants,
As much as I would love to join you this weekend, I am currently
unable to travel outside of USA+Canada+Mexico territory - that's what
happens when you lose citizenship in your birth country without
acquiring new citizenship in the country of residence...
However, I hear that there will be an Ericsson BTS set up in the
meeting room at ODC, and I wonder if someone among the attendees could
perform a few experiments for me which I would have performed myself
if I could attend.
I am seeking a full capture of the uplink output from the BTS on a
TRAU sub-timeslot (or capture the whole TS to make it easier) for a
call, in all 3 classic codecs: FR, HR, EFR. With all 3 codecs, I am
looking for BTS UL output with 'dtx uplink' enabled in OsmoBSC config,
and with these two tricks performed during the test call:
a) alternate between speaking into the mic and silence, so the MS will
go into some DTXu pauses;
b) press some DTMF keys during speech (not during silence) to exercise
the scenario of active speech frames being stolen for FACCH.
My main interest is to see what the BTS puts into traffic payload bits
(alongside with BFI=1) when absolutely nothing was received on UL (no
burst midables picked up) or when the received UL was FACCH - but of
course I might spot something else that looks interesting if and when
I get to look at some TRAU-UL captures with my own eyes.
I have never owned or laid my hands on any kind of T1/E1 BTS, hence I
have read the specs, read Osmocom code, but have no actual experience
seeing what real historical BTS implementations actually do. Hence I
am looking for some real UL output captures from _some_ E1 BTS.
Note how I said "some" E1 BTS: at this point I would be happy to see
a capture from any E1 BTS, no matter which vendor. I am asking about
Ericsson right now simply because I keep hearing that there will be an
Ericsson BTS in the ODC meeting room, but if someone has a Nokia BTS
available/accessible for play, I would be just as happy with a UL capture
from that one. In fact, a Nokia BTS UL capture might be even more
interesting: I am in the process of acquiring a Nokia TCSM2 system
(Nokia's term for the bank of TRAUs, 2nd generation), and if I had
captured UL output from Nokia Abis, I could feed it directly to the
Ater input of the TRAU. But back to Ericsson BTS at ODC, given how
well GSM 08.60 format is standardized, if I had a UL capture from
Ericsson, it would probably work just as fine as input to Nokia TRAU -
and of course I can always tweak the bits in my TRAU experiments.
If someone at OsmoDevCon could do these E1 BTS experiments for me, I
would be very grateful.
TIA,
Mychaela
Hi all!
This is JFYI for those of you who will be present already on Thursday:
I'm planning to do some build-up (power cabling, Ethenret switch, etc.)
in the meeting room / venue Thursdays from about 5pm onwards. Feel free
to stop by and say hi.
In case there are no signs up yet: Ask the reception for the meeting
room of OsmoDevCon. I don't know the room name yet, but for sure it's
in the conference centre, which is an adjunct building that can be
reached from the interior courtyard of the hotel main building.
I intend to bring all equipment on my long list that day, so stuff like
the DUG20+RUS etc. should all be on-site from that time onwards.
One of the reasons to do this Thursdays is to figure out what might be
missing so I can bring it on Friday morning. Any extra set of eyes
figuring out what we might still be needing the next day is good too
have.
Looking forward to see all of you at the event,
Harald

"Privacy in residential applications is a desirable marketing option."
(ETSI EN 300 175-7 Ch. A6)
Hi all!
This is an update on the OsmoDevCon 2024 planning.
== Hotel reservations ==
All hotel reservations are made automatically by sysmocom. If you're
listed at
https://osmocom.org/projects/osmo-dev-con/wiki/OsmoDevCon2024#Confirmed
then you have a booking with the conference hotel from the arrival to
the departure date.
Please check the table for your arrival/departure dates and make
adjustments in case the table does not reflect your planned dates.
DO NOT MAKE YOUR OWN HOTEL RESERVATION DIRECTLY WITH THE HOTEL, to avoid
any double-booking, requiring double payment
== T-Shirt sizes ==
We are currently working on a conference T-shirt. In order to produce them
in the right quantity of the right size, please indicate your size in the table
ASAP at https://osmocom.org/projects/osmo-dev-con/wiki/OsmoDevCon2024#Confirmed
== Hotel room payment ==
Only those attendees who are marked with "No" in the "free of charge
hotel+conference" column will have to pay for the hotel room (directly
to the hotel). Those are attendees working on mobile communications in their
professional capacity and where the respective employer covers the
hotel.
For all others (sysmocom team members and volunteers): The room bill (including breakfast)
will be settled by sysmocom using sponsor funding (see below).
In case there are any mistakes in this column, please contact me ASAP so
we can get it sorted out. The idea is that no individual
contributor/volunteer should be required to settle their hotel room bill.
== Conference room + catering payment ==
Those attendees who are marked with "No" in the "free of charge
hotel+conference" column will be invoiced by sysmocom.
No attendee will need to settle any related bills directly with the
hotel, unless you order spirits, long drinks or cocktails from the hotel
restaurant/bar.
== Call for Proposals ==
While the schedule is already getting crowded, we still appreciate any additional
proposals you might have. Please submit via
https://pretalx.sysmocom.de/osmodevcon2024/cfp
The first draft schedule can be seen at https://pretalx.sysmocom.de/osmodevcon2024/schedule/
== Sponsors ==
We are very happy to announce
* Africa Mobile Networks (AMN) as the Gold sponsor of the event
* Wavemobile and sysmocom as Silver sponsors of the event
Thanks for their respective generous support!
Regards,
Harald

"Privacy in residential applications is a desirable marketing option."
(ETSI EN 300 175-7 Ch. A6)
Good news, everyone [tm],
after several years of break since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, it is my
great pleasure to finally announce OsmoDevCon2024, our (previously
annual) Osmocom Developer Conference for developers, by developers.
The conference is held
*May 3rd through May 6th, 2024*
at the
*Van der Valk Hotel Berlin/Brandenburg*
conference hotel.
Contrary to our past OsmoDevCons (which have all been rather low budget,
grass roots events), laforge felt that particularly after the long
COVID-related break, it would be nice to do something slightly more
fancy: Stay together with the entire group for four days, in a
conference hotel.
sysmocom (and hopefully soon other) sponsors will cover the accomodation
and conference cost for any volunteers contributing to Osmocom only in
their spare time.
If you have contributed to Osmocom projects in the past (writing code,
funding, documentation, packaging or related activities) you are
eligible to attend. Please register no later than March 1st on the
OsmoDevCon2024 wiki page at
https://osmocom.org/projects/osmo-dev-con/wiki/OsmoDevCon2024
At the same time, the Call for Proposals is open at
https://pretalx.sysmocom.de/osmodevcon2024/cfp
I'm sure after several years of a break, everyone must have hacked on
(or learned about) many exciting things they would like to share. Any
and all proposals are greatly aprreciated. Please don't wait too long so
we can put together a draft schedule ASAP.
Looking forward to seeing many of you again,
Harald

"Privacy in residential applications is a desirable marketing option."
(ETSI EN 300 175-7 Ch. A6)
Hi all!
[cross-post to make sure everyone knows about it, please follow-up-to
the osmodevcon(a)lists.osmocom.org mailing list for further discussion]
As I mentioned several times at different occasions, I really think we
should put together a OsmoDevCon again. In case you don't know what that
is, please see https://osmocom.org/projects/osmo-dev-con/wiki/OsmoDevCon
We should have restarted already in 2023, but I really was too busy and
it was a somewhat difficult year for me at times, sorry.
Date
----
In terms of timing, I am thinking about "after April but before the main
summer holiday season (June-August)". That leaves May.
Given that May has the whitsunday weekend as well as GPN
(Gulaschprogrammiernacht, a CCC event that will likely conflict
of interest with some people interested at attending OsmoDevCon), I'm
currently considering the following candidate dates:
* May 3 to 6
* May 24 to 27
This is as usual a friday-to-monday timeframe, allowing people who don't
work professionally on osmocom to attend just the two weekendd days,
while others can attend the full 4 days.
Venue
-----
In terms of venue, I'm hoping we can move to a slightly different
arrangement where the whole group stays together for the whole duration
of the event - as opposed to everyone staying at different hotels and
having to commute from hotel to venue and back every day. So something
like a hotel with a sufficiently large meeting room, hotels and catering
all day. And all of that ideally at a nice venue with some kind of park /
outdoor area, not downtown at the city center. Yes, that will obviously
come at a higher price tag than we're used to - but I'm confident we can
get that covered between sponsors and sysmocom.
Do you guys think this is a good idea? Or would you prefer the
traditional ad-hoc approach at IN-Berlin?
Regards,
Harald

Dear Osmocom community,
This topic has been past due for way too many years by now:
A re-organization of our major mailing lists.
I would like to propose the following changes. Pleas let me know if you
have any comments or feedback. I'm aware that renaming will mean people
have to update their mail filter rules, but I think we're long past the
point where the names of some of our lists started to confuse users.
== openbsc(a)lists.osmocom.org ==
* openbsc doesn't exist anymore since OsmoNITB, which is also obsolete
* does already cover anything "Osmocom CNI" related
* Proposed new name: osmocom-cni(a)lists.osmocom.org
== osmocom-net-gprs(a)lists.osmocom.org ==
This date back to when GPRS was a highly experimental add-on to our GSM
code base. This list should simply be merged with openbsc@ as osmocom-cni(a)lists.osmocom.org
== simtrace(a)lists.osmocom.org ==
Historically was created to cover only the simtrace project.
We should rename this to osmocom-simcard(a)lists.osmocom.org or something
along those lines.
I would like to suggest it covers
* SIMtrace / SIMtrace2 hardware + firmware
* pySim and related tools for working with SIM/USIM/UICC cards
* any other information / discussion related to SIM/USIM/UICC cards,
like OTA, ARA-M, ...
== osmodevcon(a)lists.osmocom.org ==
This has been a private list for people attending OsmoDevCon
I would like to open up list membership to the general public, and ensure
it also covers the new OsmoDevCall. We could then have discussions regarding
feedback, topics, scheduling, etc. on that list.
Maybe rename it to osmocom-events(a)lists.osmocom.org instead?
To differentiate: osmocom-event-orga(a)lists.osmocom.org should remain a
private list related to organizational / administrative topics of those
involved with organizing future events.
== nextepc(a)lists.osmocom.org ==
Should have been renamed to open5gs(a)lists.osmocom.org quite some time
ago, I simply forgot about it. My apologies.

"Privacy in residential applications is a desirable marketing option."
(ETSI EN 300 175-7 Ch. A6)
Dear Osmocom community,
during recent weeks, several of you have requested that OsmoDevCon 2020
be postponed to a later point in the year. Some, like Vadim and Rafael,
have already cancelled their physical attendance meanwhile.
I still have hope that the travel restrictions might be lifted again
until OsmoDevCon happens in more than a month of time now, but that's
of course a gamble and I realize people need to have some kind of
reliable planning for travel, rather than waiting until the last day
and then see if they can make it or not.
With some reluctance, I therefore announce that we will postpone the
event to a yet-to-be-determined later point in the year. We could
try to fix a date now, but I think that doesn't make all that much sense
until the situation has cleared up to some extent.
I personally would suggest / prefer to move it to early October.
Rationale; This is clearly after the usual holiday period (no idea if
people will go on holidays in European summer 2020, but just in case).
Please let me know what you think. Also, if you think we should
converge tentative October dates already now, fine with me.
It's really sad to not have our usual meeting. We won't have a chance
to celebrate the 10th birthday of OsmocomBB.
Meanwhile, all the best to all of you. Stay safe and sane, and by all
means do continue to contribute to Osmocom - we're luckily working in
a field where working/contributing remotely is the norm, and not the
exception.
Regards,
Harald

"Privacy in residential applications is a desirable marketing option."
(ETSI EN 300 175-7 Ch. A6)
Dear Osmocom community,
it hurts me to make this statement, but unfortunately I have to cancel
my OsmoDevCon 2020 participation in April. The borders are closing due
to COVID-19, even between my home country and Russian Federation. I
have been looking forward to see you all, but this time I won't make
it.
I've seen some ideas in the IRC about making it online, but it would
not make much sense (at least to me) since we all work online anyway.
Meeting face-to-face is what makes the event so nice.
I know that most participants are EU/Berlin based, and the event can
still be held. But would it be possible to reschedule it at a later
date? Maybe in summer or autumn the situation would get better? I will
keep my flight reservation until the end of March, so it would be
possible to change the dates.
Gesundheit!
With best regards,
Vadim Yanitskiy.
Dear fellow Osmocom developers,
for OsmoDevCon2020, we're still missing your contribution. If you're
attending, Please go to https://pretalx.sysmocom.de/osmodevcon2020/cfp
and submit your idea for topics you'd like to talk about.
You can also request talks by others about topics you'd like to hear about.
Simply mention that fact in the abstract and I will remove your name as
speaker and try to find somebody among the team two would talk about that
topic.
Let's try to make sure we have most of the topics together long before the
event, so they can be grouped into tracks, etc.
Thanks for your colalboration!
And special thanks to Vadim and Rafael for submitting proposals long before
everyone else :)

Dear all,
I would like to suggest April 23rd through 27th as the dates for OsmoDevCon

It's one week after Easter holidays end in Berlin and almost all other German
states, so the hotel situation should be less crowded.
Please let me know what you think about this date, especially if anyone objects
that date.

Hi all,
as you may have seen, I've put a PGP/GPG keysigning party onto the agenda
for this OsmoDevCon. It's a great opportunity to build a local web of trust,
not only for verifying signed tags in our git repositories.
I'm not an expert in key-signing parties at all, but given the small
count of people (not sure how many are interested), I think we can do
this rather ad-hoc in the classic way with 1:1 verification and don't
have to go for optimized versions like
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zimmermann%E2%80%93Sassaman_key-signing_proto…
Based on https://wiki.debian.org/Keysigning it is recommended to print your
key fingerprint on paper using the gpg-key2ps utility and then give out
the snippets to the respective peers during the keysigning party while verifying
their ID.
If you don't have time to prepare ahead of the event: IN-Berlin has a
laser printer and I'll plan to bring a paper cutter so you can create
the snippets at any time before the key-signing party

Dear all,
as you can see at https://pretalx.sysmocom.de/osmodevcon2019/sneak/
the number of talks / discussions / ... is still quite limited for
a four-day event.
If there's anything you'd like to talk about, or you'd like to hear
somebody else about, please don't hesitate to submit it in pretalx.
As usual, we can also schedule discussions, it's by far not only about
fully-fledged presentations.
Feel free to also suggest topics outside the classic theme of mobile
communications, if you think there's something that could be interesting
to the audience.

as Dieter unfortunately is not joining us this year, my guest bed/guest
room is available during OsmoDevCon this year. So in case anyone

Note: My home is not near the venue, but I'll be going to the venue and back

Thank you, everyone, for the OsmoDevCon! The great atmosphere this year.
Several people wanted to buy XTRX at OsmoDevCon - if you haven't done that
yet, we recommend doing that today. We've just sent a message to
CrowdSupply to increase the prices of XTRX:
XTRX - $260
Deluxe - $515
It may take them some time to do that but I don't know how much.

Dear OsmoDevCon attendees,
this sounds a bit like a joke, but unfortunately it isn't.
At a construction site about 600m away from the OsmoDevCon venue (IN-Berlin),
an unexploded bomb from second world war was found. This bomb is going to
be defused this Friday, which is exactly the first day of OsmoDevCon.
For our international guests: This is not a very uncommon event. Even
73 years after the war, many German cities still have plenty of
unexploded bombs in the ground, which are uncovered during construction
work. It's usually not a big deal and the success ratio of defusing
them is extremely high.
However, of course, for safety reasons, police is evacuating a radius of
800m around the bomb site, which means
*we are unable to use our intended venue this Friday!*
You can find a map with the preliminary evacuation zone at:
https://www.morgenpost.de/bin/bmo-214049359.jpg
As you can see, not only is the OsmoDevCon venue at Lehrter Str. 53
affected, but also various nearby hotels, such as
* A&O Hostel
* Motel One Berlin
* Jugendgaestehaus Berlin
So if you are staying at any one of those locations, be prepared that
from Friday 9am onwards you will not be able to reach or enter those
hotels.
To make things worse, Berlin central station (Hauptbahnhof) is inside
the evacuation zone, too. It is expacted that all public transport, as
well as regional and long distance trains are halted during the
evacuation period.
We're looking for an alternative venue on Friday and will keep you
posted. If we can find one, this means we'd be at IN-Berlin only
Sat, Sun and Mon, but would be at that different venue on Friday.
German Police has announced to publish more details later today,
on which we'll also keep you posted.

Harald
