actually you build the all project, then use the "osmocon" program to load
the firmware in the phone.
Once the firmware is loaded you can launch one of the higher level program
as "mobile"

Yes, you should be able to call if you use mobile, I'm not sure about sms
(anyway I've never managed to have mobile fully working with a real network,
may be someone else can tell you more about this)

Sure open the code read it, understand it(this is the hard bit I think),
change it!
