AFAIR there was a patch on the ML quite a long time ago that added mysql
support. I have no idea if it worked or still applies or anything.

Are you sure you want to use mysql and not something like postgres?

I remember that somebody stumbled over a weirdness in the way the data
is actually stored in the DB (sqlite), which was caused by the DBI
layer.

Maybe you want to have a look at the ML archive.
