probably for one of the following reasons

0) linux might not have a driver for your adaptor
1) your kernel wasn't compiled with support for that device
2) the driver exists, but it does not recognize the usb vendor/product id

I would recommend searching the internet for your particular device and linux
to understand if anyone else has used this adaptor before.
