    What's the point of keeping dead code aroud? Do we have anything which uses that pidfile?

    If someone uses sysvinit (like devuan or other distros), which in turn probably uses the -D (daemonize) feature, then most probably they will also use the pidfile. That's how sysvinit scripts usually know if a process is running, and how to stop it.
