I thought used a 3.7V zener diodes in parallel between the - and +
USB power and a series resistor.

I've used LP3874. You'll need a fair bit of capacitance in order to 
transmit.

How you connect?

I designed a PCB with a battery contact and a case to hold it in
place. I've seen several people solder connections permanently to
the phone.

it was just the power connect to a USB port and trasmition and
another connection.

I don't understand this.
