another way is to shortcut the tip and middle ring of the connector, open a serial terminal and see if it echoes back what you type in

Hi,

first test if the cable is working. a fast but dirty way is to rub the
tip with your fingers. this generates noise that should show some random
input in osmocon.
also but sure to not charge the phone while using osmocon, this can
inhibit the ram loader.
